Friends of the Taos Public Library

The Friends of the Taos Public Library, a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization, supports the library through fundraising, developing the library collection, maintaining the library’s used bookstore, and publishing a quarterly newsletter.

The Friends of the Taos Public Library
is an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that raises funds to benefit the library through a bookstore, seasonal sales, memberships and sponsorships and occasional grants. We sponsor programs and projects to enhance outreach to our community, encourage reading and the use of library resources.

The Friends of the Taos Public Library is an essential community asset that provides reading opportunities and access for all residents of Taos County. Since 1991, the Friends have raised more than $3 million dollars and provided thousands of volunteer hours annually for Taos Public Library facilities, programs, staff education, and services.

The first library in Taos was located in the Harwood House, now the site of the Harwood Art Museum. In 1991 determined community members launched the Friends of the Taos Public Library to raise funds to build this current building. The Friends and generous donors raised more than $2 million dollars for construction, and shelves and furniture for this library. We also received many valuable art pieces to adorn the walls. Since then, the Friends provide funds for library acquisitions (books, periodicals and special collections), equipment, staff trainings and special events.

Today we raise funds through sales of donated books and media, and de-shelved library books. The original Library Garden was re-designed 2016-2022 with the assistance of the Taos Garden Club, and re-dedicated in September 2022. The Friends of the Taos Public Library is administered by a volunteer board of community members. The Friends of the Taos Public Library is one of thousands of such “Friend’s” groups nationally and internationally supporting libraries and literacy in their local communities.

A Few Quotes About Libraries and Reading

“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of a Library.” — AB

“A library is a place that is a repository of information and gives every citizen equal access to it. That includes health information. And mental health information. It’s a community space. It’s a place of safety, a haven from the world.” — NG

“You must live feverishly in a library. Colleges are not going to do any good unless you are raised and live in a library everyday of your life.” — RB
